The Threat
Stinging Insects Near Your Home
Wasp and bee activity in Brooklyn ramps up every spring and peaks in late summer. Paper wasps, yellowjackets, and hornets look for protected, dry spots to build nests: eaves, attics, fire escapes, behind shutters, inside wall voids, and in abandoned burrows in the ground. What starts as a small nest in April can hold thousands of insects by August.
The real risk is not one or two wasps buzzing around a window. It is the nest. An active nest near a doorway, porch, or backyard turns a normal trip outside into a hazard. Yellowjackets and hornets sting repeatedly, unlike honeybees, and they are extremely aggressive when defending the colony. For anyone with a sting allergy, even one bad encounter can be a medical emergency.
Nests inside walls are a separate category of problem. Yellowjackets sometimes chew through drywall from the outside in, ending up in living spaces. Removing a wall void nest takes specific technique. Spraying the exterior entrance does not reach the colony and often pushes the insects through the wall into the interior. The job has to be done with the right approach or the situation gets worse.
Carpenter bees are a different concern. They do not sting often and they are not aggressive, but they drill into untreated wood to nest. Year after year, the same wood gets excavated deeper. Woodpeckers find the larvae and tear the wood apart to eat them. What started as one small hole becomes a serious cosmetic and structural problem on your fascia, porch, or deck.
Know What You Have
Common Stinging Insects in NYC
Yellowjackets
Small, bright yellow and black, highly aggressive. Build paper nests in wall voids, ground holes, and attics. Will sting repeatedly.
Paper Wasps
Slender with long legs, brown or yellow. Build open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, porch ceilings, and soffits.
Bald-Faced Hornets
Large, black and white. Build football-sized gray paper nests in trees, on the sides of buildings, or in attics. Very aggressive.
European Hornets
Large brown and yellow hornets. Nest in hollow trees, attics, and wall voids. Active at night and attracted to lights.
Carpenter Bees
Large, black, shiny abdomens. Drill perfectly round half-inch holes into wood to nest. Males hover but rarely sting.
Honeybees
Fuzzy, golden brown, about half an inch. Docile unless the hive is threatened. Relocate when possible rather than eliminate.
Our Approach
How We Remove Nests Safely
Wasp and bee work is one of the few pest jobs where timing and personal safety matter as much as the treatment itself. Trying to remove a nest without the right gear, right timing, and right product almost always goes wrong. Our technicians are trained and equipped for this specifically.
Inspection and identification. We confirm the species and locate the entry point. Many wall void nests have an obvious entrance on the exterior that we identify quickly. Ground nests are trickier because the entry is often hidden in mulch, under a step, or in an abandoned rodent burrow.
Treatment. For exposed nests, we apply a fast-knockdown product directly into the nest at dawn or dusk when most wasps are inside. For wall void and ground nests, we use a dust formulation that insects carry back into the colony on their bodies. Dust reaches deep into voids where liquid sprays cannot go.
Honeybee relocation when possible. If the call is about honeybees and the hive is accessible, we work with local beekeepers to relocate the colony rather than treat it. Not every situation allows it, especially for hives deep inside wall cavities or in locations where the structure would have to be opened, but we try.
Nest removal and sealing. Once activity has stopped, we physically remove accessible nests and seal the entry points. Leaving an empty nest in place often attracts new colonies the following season. Sealing the void is the difference between a one-time fix and a recurring annual problem.
Carpenter bee treatment. Carpenter bee holes are treated with dust that the returning female passes through. The hole is then sealed with plug and caulk after activity stops. For recurring problems, we recommend painting or treating the wood to make it less attractive for next year.
What's Included
Every Bee & Wasp Job Includes
Safe Nest Removal
We wear full protective gear and use professional equipment to safely eliminate nests in hard to reach locations like eaves and wall voids.
Species Identification
Paper wasp, yellowjacket, hornet, carpenter bee, and honeybee each require a different approach. We identify before we treat.
Humane Bee Relocation
When honeybee relocation is possible, we coordinate with local beekeepers to save the colony rather than eliminate it.
Entry Point Sealing
After nest removal, we seal the access point so a new colony does not reestablish in the same location next season.
Carpenter Bee Treatment
Targeted treatment and sealing for carpenter bee holes in wood trim, porch rails, and eaves to stop the damage cycle.

If the same nest location becomes active again within the warranty period, we come back at no charge.
