The Rodent Problem in NYC
Rats and Mice Thrive in New York. Here Is Why.
New York City is one of the most rodent friendly urban environments in the country. Dense housing, constant construction, 24 hour food service, and an aging underground infrastructure give rats everything they need. The Norway rat, the city's most common species, can squeeze through a gap the size of a quarter and runs the length of a city block without breaking a sweat. House mice need even less. A hole the size of a dime is enough.
If you are seeing droppings in a kitchen drawer, hearing scratching in walls or ceilings at night, or finding gnaw marks on baseboards and pantry packaging, you have an active infestation. By the time you spot a single rat in daylight, the colony is already large. Rodents reproduce fast. A female rat can have 5 to 7 litters a year with 8 to 12 pups per litter. Left alone, a small problem turns into a serious one within a single season.
The risks are real. Rodents contaminate surfaces with urine and droppings that carry salmonella, leptospirosis, and hantavirus. They chew through electrical wiring, which is a leading cause of unexplained fires in older buildings. They tunnel through insulation and structural wood. And in commercial settings, especially restaurants and food service, rodent activity can trigger DOH violations that shut a business down.
The good news is that NYC rat problems are solvable when they are handled the right way. DIY traps from the hardware store can knock down a few individuals, but they rarely address the underlying cause: the entry points and conditions that brought rodents in. That is where we come in.
Know the Signs
How to Tell if You Have Rats or Mice
If any of these sound familiar, you probably have an active problem and it is worth a free inspection.
Droppings
Dark pellets near food, under sinks, in drawers, or along baseboards. Fresh droppings are soft and shiny.
Gnaw Marks
Chewed packaging in the pantry, bite marks on wood trim, or shredded paper and fabric used as nesting material.
Scratching Sounds
Scurrying, thumping, or scratching in walls, ceilings, or above dropped ceilings, especially at night.
Greasy Rub Marks
Dark smudges along walls and floor edges where rodents travel the same paths repeatedly.
Nesting Material
Torn insulation, shredded cardboard, or fabric piled in quiet corners, inside appliances, or behind stored items.
Pet Behavior
Dogs or cats suddenly fixated on a wall, vent, or appliance. They often hear rodents before you do.
Our Approach
How Rooftop Exterminating Handles Rodents
Our approach is built around one simple idea: killing the rats you can see is not the goal. The goal is to eliminate the colony and keep new rodents from moving in. That requires a structured process, not a one-shot spray and pray.
Inspection. A licensed technician walks the inside and outside of your property. Inside, we look at kitchens, pantries, basements, utility rooms, and anywhere we see signs of activity. Outside, we check the foundation, utility penetrations, door sweeps, window wells, and the grade line where a lot of Brooklyn rats enter. We write up what we find and review it with you before any work starts.
Trapping and baiting. We use a combination of snap traps and tamper-resistant bait stations, placed along the actual travel paths the rodents are using. Generic placements do not work. Rats run the walls and follow consistent routes. Placement is based on rub marks, droppings, and where activity is concentrated. For interior settings with children or pets, we use locked stations exclusively or go trap-only where appropriate.
Exclusion. This is where most pest control companies cut corners. We physically seal the entry points rats and mice are using. Steel wool and hardware cloth for small gaps, mortar and copper mesh for foundation cracks, metal flashing for door sweeps and chewed corners. We focus on permanent repairs, not foam that rats chew through in a week.
Sanitation and follow-up. We return 7 to 14 days after the first visit to check trap activity, remove captured rodents, and reset or adjust placements. On request we also handle droppings cleanup and decontamination. Most jobs are resolved in 2 to 3 visits. Heavy infestations take a bit longer, but you will see progress quickly.
Every step is documented. You get a clear summary of what was found, what was done, and what you can do going forward to keep rodents from becoming a recurring problem.
What's Included
Every Rodent Job Includes
Free Inspection
A licensed technician walks the property, identifies entry points, and writes up a clear plan before you pay anything.
Strategic Trap Placement
Snap traps and tamper-resistant bait stations are placed along runways, not randomly on the floor. Placement is based on how rodents actually move.
Entry Point Sealing
We seal the gaps where rats and mice enter: foundation cracks, pipe chases, utility penetrations, airshafts, and exterior vents.
Sanitation & Cleanup
Droppings, nesting material, and carcasses removed on request. We handle the biohazard side so you do not have to.
Follow Up Visits
Rodent jobs are rarely one and done. We come back to check trap activity, reset what needs resetting, and confirm the problem is gone.
Written Warranty
If rats come back within the warranty period on the work we performed, we come back at no charge. In writing.

Common Questions
Rat & Mouse Control FAQs
Most residential rat problems are under control within 2 to 4 weeks. The first visit sets traps and identifies entry points. A follow-up visit about a week later checks trap activity, adjusts placements, and seals the openings rats were using. Heavy infestations or multi-unit buildings can take longer, especially when neighboring properties are also feeding activity. We give you a realistic timeline after the free inspection, not a guess.
